RESOLUTION DESIGNATING MAY 2022 AS “STROKE AWARENESS MONTH” IN PENNSYLVANIA Please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution designating the month of May as “Stroke Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. According to the Center for Disease Control, in 2020, 1 in 6 deaths from cardiovascular disease was due to stroke. Stroke is a leading cause of death for Americans, but the risk of having a stroke varies with race and ethnicity. Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke. Every 3.5 minutes, someone dies of stroke. The most severe type of stroke is known as emergent large vessel occlusion (ELVO), when a clot prevents the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain and kills up to two million brain cells per minute until it is removed. Knowing the warning signs and symptoms of a stroke is critical as early action is key to minimizing the severity and damaging effects of strokes, possibly saving a life. In May, and year-round, I am encouraging those in the Commonwealth to memorize F.A.S.T.:
It is for this reason that I would like to designate May 2022 as “Stroke Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. |
