Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 16, 2022 04:29 PM
From: Senator Scott Martin and Sen. Jake Corman, Sen. Cris Dush
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution Recognizing the 2021-22 Pennsylvania State University Wrestling Team

In the near future, Senators Corman, Dush and I will be introducing a resolution to congratulate several members of the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) wrestling team on their achievements and for their individual victories during the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship. The resolution will also acknowledge the team’s ninth Division 1 Team Championship in the past twelve years (eleven years if the canceled 2020 Championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic is not counted) as well as the achievements of head coach, Cael Sanderson and his amazing coaching staff.

Five of the PSU wrestlers, Roman Bravo-Young, Nick Lee, Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks and Max Dean won individual NCAA titles in their respective weight classes and Greg Kerkvliet finished 4th.  Each of these outstanding athletes earned the title of All-American for the year as well as several other personal distinctions and awards.

It is important to put into perspective the Penn State Wrestling dynasty that we have seen since Head Coach Cael Sanderson’s arrival over a decade ago. Since 2011, they not only have won 9 team titles, PSU wrestlers have a 45-5 record in crucial semifinal bouts at the NCAA Tournament. Those victories have translated to Penn State wrestlers winning thirty-two, or nearly one-third (29.1%), of all individual championships that could’ve been won in all weight classes over that period of time.  Finally, PSU is the only team with at least one individual champion in each weight class during that same period.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this resolution to congratulate these young men on their outstanding achievements on the mat.
