Subject: | Two Week Sales Tax Holiday |
In the near future, I will introduce legislation that will place a two week pause on Pennsylvania collecting sales tax. The moratorium will take place during the last seven days of June and the first seven days of July. Those two weeks were chosen because the loss in revenue will impact two fiscal year revenues as opposed to impacting one. We need to give consumers a relief from increased prices, even temporarily, especially when Pennsylvania is running budget surplus. Our current fiscal year-to-date General Fund collections total $40.7 billion, which is $4.5 billion, or 12.4 percent, above estimate. My original plan would have implemented a two month pause on collecting sales tax. However, after receiving feedback, the idea for a two week pause is more palatable. I hope by limiting it to two weeks it is something we can do regularly for the people of Pennsylvania. Please join me in this important initiative. |
