Subject: | Native American Heritage Month |
In the near future, I will introduce a resolution designating the month of November 2022 as “Native American Heritage Month” in Pennsylvania to recognize the accomplishments of the people who were the original inhabitants, explorers, and settlers of the United States. The quest for national recognition honoring Native Americans began in the early 20th century as a private effort. As far back as the late 1970s, Congress has enacted legislation and subsequent presidents have issued annual proclamations designating a day, week, or month to celebrate and commemorate the nation’s Native Americans and Alaska Natives. In 2009, Congress passed, and the president signed legislation that established the Friday immediately following Thanksgiving Day of each year as “Native American Heritage Day.” I ask that you join me to co-sponsor this resolution in an effort to acknowledge the contributions of Native Americans and indigenous people who have significantly influenced our history and culture. Please reach out to my legislative director, Micah Mahjoubian, at micah.mahjoubian@pasenate.com, with any questions. |
