Subject: | Fair Work Week |
Pennsylvania workers are more than workers: they are parents and grandparents, and they are human beings who need to go to the doctor or who attend college classes. In all cases, whether the reasons are due to family care responsibilities, pursuit of higher education, a second job, or the simple need and right to have time off, it is long past time that Pennsylvania put the wellbeing of its people above big corporate profits. Workers in the retail, fast food, and hospitality industries are often subjected to unpredictable and unreasonable work schedules. These schedules are often produced by a computer program that doesn’t consider a person’s life outside of work and that shifts work schedules with little or no notice. Workers who speak out against these inhumane practices often face retaliation. The people of Pennsylvania deserve better. I am asking my colleagues to follow the lead set by the City of Philadelphia and pass a Pennsylvania Fair Work Week law. This legislation will require employers to set clear workweek rules, so employees can know when and how much they will work. In addition, it will guarantee “predictability pay,” which pays workers when their shift is canceled or drastically changed. By establishing predictability, we can help families, strengthen our communities, and forge a real path out of poverty. Please stand with the working people of Pennsylvania by co-sponsoring this legislation. |
