Subject: | Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption Start Date |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that will institute a process for disabled veterans to receive a prorated property tax assessment during the year in which they have been approved for the disabled veterans’ real estate tax exemption. It has been brought to my attention that under existing provisions, if a prospective veteran applies for a disabled property tax exemption but does not receive approval prior to the due date of a property tax bill, the local taxing district may require the veteran to pay the full amount due. In these cases, the veteran will not receive the benefit of the exemption, which is constitutionally required, until the following tax year. I do not believe the current process meets the intent of the program as originally contemplated. My legislation will require any tax assessed on property owned by a disabled veteran to be prorated from the date an eligible applicant files for the exemption with the State Veterans' Commission. If approval is granted, an approved veteran would be responsible for any tax assessed from the beginning of the tax year to the date in which they filed with the Commission. I believe this measure is vital to ensuring the financial security and peace of mind for our disabled veterans. I respectfully ask that you join me and co-sponsor this important legislation. |
