Subject: | Classifying Dyslexia as a Disability under the Public School Code |
Dyslexia is a disability that affects students throughout our state. Sadly, our outdated laws do not recognize this reality. Because of this, school often fail to address dyslexia and often fail to provide students the support they need. We are introducing legislation to remedy this issue. Our bill will amend the Public School Code by adding dyslexia to what constitutes a disability, thereby requiring specially designed instruction. This will ensure schools offer needed educational services to students with dyslexia. In 2014, the state legislature enacted a dyslexia pilot project through bipartisan effort. That was a start. It has helped students suffering from dyslexia, but we can do more. Please join us in supporting this necessary legislation. |
