Subject: | Notifying Consumers of a Price Increase During a Declared Disaster Emergency |
Consumers have a right to know why prices increase, especially in the time of a declared disaster emergency when many working families face financial challenges. Often, businesses are forced to raise prices through no fault of their own. Regardless, they should notify their customers to assure fairness and transparency of pricing. This is especially apt when prices rise significantly. My legislation would require businesses to notify consumers when prices for goods and services increase 10% or more during a declared disaster emergency. Notification must be displayed with the item, in a conspicuous manner, displaying the price prior to the declared disaster emergency, the current price, and the percentage of increase. If the increase is beyond the control of the business, they may display the reason for the increase, if they choose. Consumers deserve and should expect fairness in pricing from businesses especially when many families are struggling financially. I hope you will join me in providing fairness in pricing and supporting Pennsylvania consumers by co-sponsoring this legislation. |
