Subject: | Pennsylvania Drug Shortage Reporting System |
Throughout the U.S., viruses like the flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are currently circulating amongst the population, sometimes leading to other illnesses like bronchitis or ear infections. When illnesses like these occur, the demand for treatments surge, often leading to a shortage in available medicines. For instance, the significant rise in the number of childhood illnesses this year has led to a serious shortage in children’s antibiotics, such as amoxicillin. It is imperative that families be kept aware of any potential shortages in the drugs necessary to treat their children and themselves. For this reason, I am introducing legislation to create a Pennsylvania Drug Shortage Reporting System to require state-based manufacturers to report to the Pennsylvania Department of Health any instance of a discontinuation or interruption in the production of a life-saving drug. The department would then be required to list the reported drug shortages on their publicly accessible website and allow individuals to sign up to get information about where the drugs are available. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to ensure the health and safety of Pennsylvanians at all times. |
