Subject: | Disclosing Credentials of “Life” Coaches to Protect Consumers |
Many individuals choose to seek out a “life coach” or a coach to help them with improving an aspect of their life. Coaches mentor an individual to help them reach their identified goals in different areas such as health and wellness, relationships, or professional development. However, a coach does not need to have specific qualifications like education or certification to call themselves an expert in their field. Too often, consumers seek out an individual labeling themselves as a coach when in fact that coach is not qualified to be providing the mentorship an individual needs.
My legislation would require all individuals, who label themselves as a “coach,” to disclose their specific credentials qualifying them as a coach in all oral, written, and visual advertisements. My bill would also extend this same requirement to others in unlicensed professions that do not mandate credentials including those individuals who use the titles of expert, advisor, guru, influencer, or master. The requirements of this bill would not apply to sports coaches.
Consumers have the right to be informed and deserve a fair deal when they are seeking help and mentorship. We as legislators need to take action to protect consumers from unqualified individuals looking to take advantage of our constituents. Please join me in protecting our consumers by ensuring that they receive quality services from unlicensed professionals. |
