MEMORANDUM

Subject: Compensation for School Board Members

I am introducing legislation that would repeal the prohibition of compensation for school board members and allow each community to decide whether members can be paid. Any salary approved by a school board would be equal to the compensation limits for an individual locally elected to serve in the municipality in which the school district is located. This legislation would ensure that school board members all across Pennsylvania have the opportunity to be fairly paid for the essential work they do for our communities.

School board members have one of the most challenging and important obligations in government and deserve to be paid for the work and time they put in for our schools and students. They have a vast array of duties including adopting budgets, reviewing and setting district policies, and ensuring students and staff have the resources they need to achieve educational success. Under Pennsylvania law, however, they are prohibited from receiving any compensation for their many hours of service to school districts.  This is not consistent with other locally elected officials in Pennsylvania who can receive pay for their service. Public service is the same whether you are elected to a school board or a local municipality, and it is time we establish parity between the two.

Other states allow school board members to be paid, and it is time Pennsylvania does the same. I hope you will join me in supporting this important legislation that will help our dedicated school board members across the state.
