Subject: | Performance of Marriage Ceremonies to Include Legislators |
Many legislators returning to Harrisburg have been asked by constituents to officiate their marriage ceremonies and many freshman legislators will soon receive the same request. While several states include legislators among the “public officials” who may perform civil marriage ceremonies, Pennsylvania does not. For this reason, I will be introducing legislation to allow members of the General Assembly to officiate marriages in Pennsylvania. The proposal would apply to current members as well as former members who left their chamber after November 30, 2020, if they register with the Chief Clerk. By allowing members of the General Assembly to officiate marriages, we will allow couples in Pennsylvania one more option for how they would like to conduct their marriages. We will also never have to turn down our neighbors who ask if we can, as a legislator, officiate their marriage. Please join me by cosponsoring legislation that will give members of the General Assembly an additional way to serve our constituents. |
