MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 8, 2023 02:27 PM
From: Representative Steven R. Malagari
To: All House members
Subject: REAL ID Discount for Seniors (Formerly HB1062)

Beginning May 7, 2025, federal law will require all Pennsylvanians to carry a REAL ID-compliant identification card to board commercial flights or enter a federal facility. ,   As we continue the process of issuing these cards, many have voiced concerns about the cost.

If a resident of Pennsylvania wishes to apply for a REAL ID, they are required to pay a one-time REAL ID fee along with the renewal fee for a license or identification card, regardless of the expiration date on their current ID. The cost to obtain a REAL ID can be a burden for senior citizens living on a fixed income, and without a REAL ID, seniors will not be able to travel to another state by airplane to visit family and friends.

Our senior citizens should be able to enjoy their retirement without the stress of added fees. That is why I am introducing a bill to eliminate the added costs associated with REAL ID for people 65 years of age and older.

Pennsylvania is home to one of the largest populations of senior citizens in the country, and we should work to ease their financial stress. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
