Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 13, 2023 09:33 PM
From: Representative Stephenie Scialabba
To: All House members
Subject: No Compulsion in Education

I recently learned that each and every undergraduate Pitt student from 2018 and beyond MUST

"complete one course that is designated as a Diversity course"  (see the relevant General Education requirements, found here: General Education Requirements | The Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Studies | University of Pittsburgh)

It is my firm belief that these courses ought to be offered as electives and should not be forced upon students, especially where the pedagogy is unbalanced with a mandatory course of counterthought.

Please join me in advancing legislation that prohibits state funded institutions from requiring the completion of such courses or otherwise negatively impacting those students who choose to avoid compulsory indoctrination.

Introduced as HB2041
