Subject: | Protecting the Commonwealth’s information technology assets |
Please join me as a co-sponsor of legislation to protect the Commonwealth’s information technology assets from security risks associated with the social media network TikTok. While TikTok has proven to be popular worldwide, the relationship between its parent company, ByteDance, and the authoritarian government of China has raised concerns about the wisdom of allowing the program to be installed on domestic governmental devices and networks. Under this legislation, executive agencies, independent agencies, the General Assembly, and the Unified Judicial System will have 60 days to remove TikTok from its information technology assets. This legislation is similar to the No TikTok on Government Devices Act, which was enacted into federal law on Dec. 29, 2022. Similar prohibitions have been adopted by Canada, the European Union, Taiwan and more than half of our fellow states. I look forward to working with you on this important legislation. |
