| Subject: | Amending the Unemployment Compensation Law to help workers who work multiple jobs |
| With the state and federal minimum wage currently stuck at $7.25 per hour, many people must work multiple full-time jobs to survive. If these minimum wage workers lose one of those sources of income, their entire livelihoods could be in jeopardy and they may not be eligible for full unemployment compensation benefits. My bill will amend the Unemployment Compensation Law by changing the definition of “unemployed” to prevent individuals from losing benefits, whether full or partial, if they continue to have earnings outside of their claim. The liability for this claim will fall on the employer who terminated services with the employee, not on the employer of the active employee who is claiming benefits. According to the Department of Labor and Industry, the average weekly benefit amount for all weeks paid in 2022 was $417 per week. However, if the claimant had other earnings, they would see an average reduction of $161 to their weekly payments. That is almost a 40% decrease when the claimant needs this benefit the most. My legislation seeks to amend this shortcoming. Please join me in providing workers with the financial assistance they need by co-sponsoring this bill. |
