| Subject: | Ensuring Proper Use of Electric Vehicle Charging Spots |
| In the United States, the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) is growing each year. As of 2021, over 2 million electric vehicles were on the road nationwide, and an increasing number of new vehicles sold each year are electric. As this technology becomes increasingly common, we need to make sure that our laws adapt to the unique situations this will bring. The limited but rapidly expanding availability of public charging stations is an essential component of the increased adoption of electric vehicles, expanding effective vehicle range and providing opportunities for those without at-home charging. Availability of a charging station could be a factor for EV owners planning trips, an attraction to a business for local travelers, or an essential part of a resident’s day. The blocking of charging stations for reasons other than charging is a common frustration among many EV owners and has been cited by planners in Pennsylvania as a challenge to EV deployment. That is why I am introducing legislation to ensure spots clearly marked as reserved for electric vehicle charging are properly utilized and cannot be used by non-electric vehicles or vehicles not connected for charging. Eighteen states, including Florida and North Dakota, have already passed laws protecting EV charging stations from being blocked. Especially as most municipal parking ordinances have lagged behind and not been amended to account for the growing prevalence of electric vehicles, there is a growing issue with ensuring EV charging spots are properly utilized. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation so that these charging stations can be available for their intended purpose and those who need them.
