Subject: | CPR and AED Certification for Coaches and Afterschool Supervisors |
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) strikes without warning and is the number one cause of death in young athletes. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. CPR is a crucial step while waiting for emergency responders or an automated external defibrillator (AED) device. This legislation would require any coach who participates in school-sponsored sports activities and any supervisor of afterschool activities, clubs, or school-sponsored events to be certified in CPR as well as the use of AED devices. Additionally, it would require the same individuals to renew their certification every two years through the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, or any equivalent course approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Under this bill, these trainings would be eligible for Act 48 credits. Please join us in cosponsoring this important legislation to protect our students from sudden cardiac arrest. |
