MEMORANDUM

Subject: Prohibiting Split Rates on Public Projects

The state Prevailing Wage Act was enacted to create an even playing field for contractors bidding on construction projects where taxpayer money is at stake. The law requires that the prevailing minimum wage be paid to all workers employed on public projects. Regrettably, some contractors go around the law by paying workers split rates – two different rates paid to the worker for the same job on the same day. This hurts workers and goes against the intent of the Prevailing Wage Act.

I intend to introduce legislation amending the Prevailing Wage Act to require that workers be paid the appropriate rate for their work and be paid the same rate for the same project. This is a simple fix that will have a large impact on men and women working on public projects. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
