Subject: | Recognizing May 2023 as Older Americans Month |
Like many states across the country, Pennsylvania has an aging population and there is an ever-greater responsibility to recognize the importance of caring for elders and to embrace their role in our communities. Nearly one in five Pennsylvanians are over the age of 65, with the number of Pennsylvanians over the age of 65 continuing to grow each year. In rural areas of our Commonwealth, the average age is higher, which means changing demographics will have a greater impact in those communities. The workforce is aging in these areas, and more residents enroll in Medicare. Our resolution would recognize May 2023 as Older Americans Month. This year’s theme is “Aging Unbound” and focuses on the diverse ways in which people experience aging. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of when Older Americans Month was first recognized in the United States, Pennsylvania should embrace the opportunity to participate in this tradition. By recognizing Older Americans Month, we can take one step towards supporting older Pennsylvanians. We have the opportunity to honor the knowledge and experience of our elders and set ourselves on a path towards a healthier mindset about aging and respecting the experience of people as they grow older. Please join us in recognizing May 2023 as Older Americans Month. Together, let us support this much needed resolution and show our aging family members, friends and neighbors the respect they deserve. |
