Subject: Excluding Cryptocurrency from the Data Center Sales Tax Exemption
 
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to amend the Tax Reform Code to exclude cryptocurrency mining operations from the Sales and Use Tax Exemption Program for the purchase of data center equipment.  This program was added to the Tax Reform Code in 2021 and crypto mining companies are now taking advantage of it, with the potential for more to do so in the future.
 
The crypto mining industry is a massive energy user.  Globally, crypto mining consumes more energy than countries like Argentina and Australia.  This high level of energy usage increases demand for fossil fuels, placing more stress on the environment and accelerating the climate crisis.
