Subject: | Parliamentarian of the House of Representatives |
In the near future, I plan to introduced legislation that would make the process of choosing a Parliamentarian in the House of Representatives consistent with the Senate. Currently, appointment of a parliamentarian for the House of Representatives is dictated by Act 120 of 1931 (Parliamentarian for House of Representatives Appointed) which provides for the appointment of a parliamentarian for the House of Representatives and defines their duties and fixes compensation. My legislation would repeal the current process and would require members of the House of Representatives to elect the Parliamentarian who shall serve for two years unless removed by a majority vote of all members. The Parliamentarian would have the same responsibilities given to them as they currently do. However, all members of the House of Representatives would be able to contribute to the process to choose a parliamentarian. Currently, House members elect our Chief Clerk and the Director of the Legislative Reference Bureau. Please join me in creating a process to choose any future candidates for Parliamentarian of the House of Representatives. |
