Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 23, 2023 10:24 AM
From: Representative Mary Jo Daley and Rep. Timothy J. O'Neal
To: All House members
Subject: Good Friday Agreement - 25th Anniversary

On April 10, 1998, the Good Friday Agreement was signed by Tony Blair and Bertie Ahern, former prime minister and Taoiseach (prime minister) of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, respectively.  The Agreement was then approved by public votes in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

In 1921, the Irish War of Independence concluded with the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty.  This treaty provided for the establishment of the Irish Free State, a self-governing dominion within the “Community of Nations known as the British Empire.”  It also provided Northern Ireland with an option to opt out of the Irish Free State, which the parliament of Northern Ireland exercised.

The Irish Free State, which was later renamed the Republic of Ireland, was fully independent and consisted mostly of Catholics.  Northern Ireland remained under British rule and was mostly made up of Protestants.  With concerns over discrimination and the infringement of civil rights among many within Northern Ireland, tensions rose over time and by the late 1960s, armed groups on both sides began fighting.  For nearly 30 years, the Catholic nationalists and Protestant unionists fought each other, with about 3,500 people losing their lives.  The fighting finally ended with the signing and approval of the Good Friday Agreement, which created a framework for political power-sharing between nationalists and unionists within Northern Ireland.

Please join us in support of our resolutions to recognize the significance of the Good Friday Agreement in bringing about peace in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
