Subject: Understanding Reimbursement Rates

Medical Assistance provides our residents with the ability to access preventive and episodic care including visits to hospitals. This care is essential to the health and well-being of the communities we serve across the Commonwealth. Program-participating hospitals and health care providers provide quality care, and in turn Medical Assistance covers the cost of services—that is, in theory. Far too often, hospitals and providers face payment shortages because reimbursement rates can be too low. This is something that needs to change.

To better understand this challenge, we intend to introduce legislation that directs the Joint State Government Commission to study hospital and health care provider reimbursement rates within Pennsylvania under Medical Assistance. This study will outline the current payment structure for hospitals and current provider reimbursement rates and recommendations on how to solve this phenomenon.

As legislators, we have the responsibility to be informed on the issues facing our residents. Hospital payment shortages impact us all, as these deficits get passed onto residents of the Commonwealth through increased prices. This study will present us with the tools needed to succeed. Please join us in co-sponsoring this much needed legislation and help us get the answers we need.
