| In 2021, House Resolution 142 was adopted to direct the Joint State Government Commission to conduct a comprehensive study and review of the State Board of Nursing. A report containing the Commission’s findings and recommendations, including ways to improve the overall processes within the State Board of Nursing, was issued to the Professional Licensure Committees in the House and Senate One of the recommendations outlined in the report is to reexamine the composition of the State Board of Nursing, including length of board terms and board member requirements. Currently in Pennsylvania, State Board of Nursing board members serve six-year terms, and there is nothing in the Professional Nursing Law requiring a board member to be a Pennsylvania resident. According to the report, Pennsylvania and Georgia are the only two states that do not require board members to reside within the jurisdiction at the time of board appointment and Pennsylvania is one of three states which have board terms of six years or more. Most states, and other state licensing boards in Pennsylvania, have term lengths of four years. Therefore, in the near future I plan to introduce legislation to amend the Professional Nursing Law to reduce board terms from six years to four years, and to require board members to be residents of this Commonwealth.
