| Subject: | Cancer Survivor Week and Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) Day |
| The number of cancer survivors in the United States is projected to increase to 22.2 million by 2030 from an estimated 16.9 million in 2019. Cancer survivorship consists of living with cancer, living through cancer, and living beyond cancer. Each stage is accompanied by physical, emotional, and financial hardships. Although there have been noted advances in cancer treatment and research in recent years, further education and resources are needed in the fight against this debilitating disease. The American Cancer Society estimated that, in 2023, there will be about 88,450 new cancer cases in this Commonwealth. Further, about 32,590 cases of cancer of unknown primary (CUP) will be diagnosed in the United States. CUP is a type of cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, and its point of origin is uncertain. Due to an unpredictable pattern of metastatic spread and resistance to chemotherapy, CUP has an average survival rate of five to eleven months. It is imperative that we honor all cancer survivors for their strength, courage, and inspiration and foster greater awareness of CUP to better protect ourselves and our families. However, it is not enough to temporarily acknowledge the importance of these topics as cancer will unfortunately continue to impact the lives of many to come. Accordingly, I am introducing legislation to permanently designate November 26 through December 2 as “Cancer Survivor Week” and designate November 30 as “Cancer of Unknown Primary Day” in Pennsylvania. It is my hope that you will join me in this collective effort to properly educate and generate awareness about a disease that has affected so many individuals in our nation. |
