Subject: | Conservation Officer Protection Act |
In the near future, my colleague Representative Joe Hamm and I plan to introduce legislation amending Title 34, the Pennsylvania Game and Wildlife Code, to protect Pennsylvania Wildlife Conservation officers and others charged with enforcing Title 34 regulations from retaliation and harassment. As you may know, the standard practice of the Pennsylvania Game Commission requires conservation officers to list their names and home addresses on a citation, special permit or any other official business issued by the officer. Police officers are not required to do this, and with good reason as recipients of a citation or any other bad news could make the offender angry and possibly seek retribution. Placing a conservation officer’s name and address on any citation puts not only the officer in danger of bodily harm or harassment, but their families as well. This legislation would direct conservation officers to use a post office box or the address of their headquarters instead of their home address for the purpose of citations and business mail. This legislation will be known as the Conservation Officer Protection Act (COPA). Thank you for your consideration of this proposal. |
