MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 2, 2023 12:03 PM
From: Representative Jonathan Fritz
To: All House members
Subject: Streamlined Process to Replace Illegible License Plates

Haggard, unreadable license plates are a prevalent problem in Pennsylvania. Drivers with illegible plates are in violation of Section 1332 of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, which may result in a $100 fine. Many of our constituents drive around unknowingly aware that their peeling, worn out plate is a liability.

Current law provides that only a PA State Trooper or a certified inspection mechanic can initiate the process of getting an illegible plate replaced. Our vehicle owners deserve more options.

My legislation would enable our district staff to initiate the process. Our staff has access to all the criteria necessitated; numerous offices in the Commonwealth, camera, state connected computer, contacts at PENNDOT that can supply plates, and a system for return of old plates.

Please consider signing onto this legislation.
