MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Urging Congress and the President to Reexamine Ethiopian U.S. Foreign Policy

Ethiopia—an East African country home to more than 125 million people—has had a longstanding friendship with the United States. However, Ethiopia is currently facing a critical threat to its democracy: namely, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The Ethiopian people have suffered under Prime Minister Ahmed’s violent and ethnocentric policies that target minorities and infringe upon basic rights to freedom of speech, assembly, and religion. These violent policies have resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of arbitrary arrests of religious leaders and members of the press.

I will soon be introducing a resolution urging President Biden and the United States Congress to recognize these human rights violations and reexamine its foreign policy towards Ethiopia. It is imperative that the United States take action to end the warfare and persecution of ethnic minorities in Ethiopia.

As Pennsylvanians and Americans, we understand the importance of democratic freedoms; it is crucial that we stand up when democracy is threatened. I hope you will join me in support of our Ethiopian friends by signing on as a co-sponsor of this resolution.
