Subject: | Designating November 2023 as “Native American Heritage Month” |
Before European settlers arrived in the late seventeenth century, Pennsylvania was home to various tribal nations, each having its own distinct language and way of life. Ultimately, the Indigenous people who comprised these tribes left a lasting impact on our state’s culture and history. It is because of this that I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing November 2023 as “Native American Heritage Month” and, in doing so, commemorate the strong connection Indigenous people have to our state. In 1990, the federal government proclaimed the month of November as “Native American Heritage Month.” Here in Pennsylvania, I plan to echo this important sentiment, highlighting the stories and cultures of Indigenous people. During this time, it is important that we celebrate the many contributions made by Indigenous people towards science, language, economics, and art throughout our state and our nation. In so doing, we honor the lasting impact of the Indigenous people who inhabited our state. Please join me in supporting this resolution to honor the enduring legacy and heritage of the Indigenous people and tribal nations who have resided in Pennsylvania |
