Subject: | Studying and Increasing Juror Compensation |
Trial by jury is an essential component of our judicial system. However, jurors are only paid $9 per day for the first three days of jury duty and $25 per day for subsequent days. This compensation is not sufficient in addressing missed work to attend to jury duty. Moreover, adequate compensation that is consistent with prevailing wages is beneficial for those working minimum wage positions. Fair juror compensation is fundamental in ensuring that economic inequities do not affect participation in jury duty. It is our hope that you will join us in supporting jurors and the efficiency of Pennsylvania’s judicial system by prioritizing the increasing need to study juror compensation as well as raising the amount of juror compensation. Document #1 This resolution would direct the Joint State Government Commission to conduct a study regarding juror compensation and provide recommendations on improving financial support for jurors. Document #2 This bill would increase juror compensation to $40 per day for the first three days of juror service and $50 per day for subsequent days of juror service. The county commissioners in each county would be required to select the method of compensation. |
