Subject: | Staff Sergeant William Stivison Memorial Bridge |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation designating a bridge carrying Jacksonville Road (State Route 3016) over Two Lick Creek in Homer City, Indiana County, as the Staff Sergeant William Stivison Memorial Bridge. William Stivison was born on July 19, 1919, in Homer City, Indiana County. William Stivison joined the National Guard in 1935 and then in 1941, he joined the United States Army where he became a Staff Sergeant and Section Leader in the 2nd Ranger Infantry Battalion. On March 30, 1945, Staff Sergeant Stivison encountered surprise enemy fire while moving into position in Germany. During an assault on German positions, Staff Sergeant Stivison demolished a machine gun nest and killed nine enemy soldiers and continued to attack toward the German defenses. As his platoon was withdrawing, Staff Sergeant Stivison remained to draw the fire of the enemy away while his comrades withdrew. For his bravery, Staff Sergeant Stivison received the Silver Star, Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts with two Oak Clusters. On April 2, 2007, Staff Sergeant Stivison passed away in his sleep at his home in Homer City, Indiana County. I hope you will sponsor this legislation and join me in honoring this brave hero. |
