Subject: | Extending the Disabled Veterans’ Real Estate Tax Exemption to the surviving spouses of service members killed in action |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that extends the Disabled Veterans’ Real Estate Tax Exemption to the unmarried spouses of service members who are killed in action. Currently, veterans who suffer certain severe injuries during their service, as well as those who are determined 100% disabled as a result of their service, can qualify for the Disabled Veterans’ Real Estate Tax Exemption. Upon these heroes’ death, their unmarried spouses may qualify for this exemption if residency and financial need requirements are met. My bill would extend the same exemption to the unmarried spouses of service members who are killed in action. Gold Star Families experience loss that many of us cannot relate to. While there is no legislative proposal which offers permanent healing for the loss of a loved one, we can make small gestures to demonstrate our admiration for these brave men and women as well as our eternal appreciation to their families. I believe my proposal is one of those small gestures, and I ask my colleagues to join me as cosponsors of this important piece of legislation. |
