Subject: | Maintaining the Integrity of Mental Health Supports |
Recently, I have been contacted by the parents of students who attend a Luzerne County School District. According to the students, Kooth – a web-based counseling program that was awarded a grant through the Department of Human Services to contract with school districts – was present at a assembly and passing out candy to students to incentivize them to sign up for an account, with an emphasis that they did not have to tell their parents about it. Maintaining our students’ mental health is a top priority – one that families and the school should work together as a team to address. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) said it best: “people experiencing mental illness – and the people who care for them – need information.” Bribing our children into keeping secrets from their parents about their mental health is harmful to our students and diminishes the integrity of long sought after recognition about the seriousness of this issue. In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that prohibits mental health services that contract with school districts from distributing prizes for signing up for a service. Please consider joining this important initiative. |
