Subject: | Helping to Prepare Fire Companies to Respond to Accidents Involving Electric Vehicles |
As electric vehicle adoption continues to trend upward, firefighters are being faced with new challenges when responding to incidents involving electric vehicles. Because of the presence of batteries and the lack of liquid fuel, the strategies used to respond to accidents involving electric vehicles will be different. It is time to update our statutes to address the new issues posed by this new technology. This legislation would clarify current law to ensure that the costs of hazardous material response for responding to electric vehicle incidents are paid for through an annual fee by an owner of an electric vehicle. Second, this legislation would include a $250 annual fee for electric vehicles that would be dedicated to funding fire companies who respond to electric vehicle incidents. I look forward to working with you on this important legislation. |
