Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 1, 2024 04:53 PM
From: Representative Greg Scott and Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta
To: All House members
Subject: Designating December 16, 2024, as “Charles Blockson Day”

As a child, Charles Blockson’s teacher told him that Black people have no history and that they were born to serve white people. This sparked in him a passion for knowledge and led him to become a prominent Black scholar. During his life, Mr. Blockson co-founded the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Museum in Philadelphia, served as curator of the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection of African-Americana and the African Diaspora at Penn State University, and amassed one of the world’s largest collections of African American and African books, papers, photos, and artifacts—a collection that he donated to Temple University.

With his passing last year, Mr. Blockson left behind a wealth of knowledge, and his impact should not go unappreciated. To honor his enduring legacy and contributions, we are introducing a resolution designating December 16, 2024, his birthday, as “Charles Blockson Day.”

Charles Blockson set out on a lifelong journey to contribute significantly to the understanding of Black history. His collection remains a valuable resource for scholars and the community. Please join us in co-sponsoring this resolution to honor a titan and trailblazer.
