MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 11, 2024 09:47 AM
From: Representative Natalie Mihalek
To: All House members
Subject: Pro PA Act

Pennsylvania prides itself as a state with a wealth of diversity in its travel and tourism industry. As we head toward warmer weather, our travel and tourism industry drop into gear preparing for the summer months ahead. Visitors from all over the Commonwealth and abroad will travel to our amusement parks, world-class cities and enjoy the abundant natural wonders we have to offer. Many of these visitors will be using our interstates and highways to get to their destinations and when they do, they will have frequent opportunities to stop along their journey at one of our welcome centers or rest areas that dot our roads.

During my own recent travels throughout the state, I noticed the myriad of tourism materials available at our travel plazas.  Out of curiosity, I began picking up these materials and have amassed quite the collection of promotional materials for Ohio, West Virginia, Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and many other places outside the Commonwealth.

This is inconsistent with the Department of Transportation’s own policy that requires any materials found in these locations to exclusively promote Pennsylvania tourism.  Even more confounding is the $1.2 million contract with the vendor that supplies these materials is supposed to be supplying materials promoting PA.

If you agree that it is wrong to use Pennsylvania taxpayer dollars to promote other states’ tourism industries, please join me in sponsoring this legislation that provides that a Commonwealth entity will only display Pennsylvania promotional tourism materials and will not display out of state promotional tourism materials.
