| Subject: | May 2024 as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Awareness Month in Pennsylvania |
| In the near future, we intend to introduce a resolution recognizing May 2024 as “Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease. ALS attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord, ultimately resulting in a loss of voluntary muscle control, paralysis and death. ALS is the most common neuromuscular disease in the world. Each year an estimated 5,000 new people in the United States are diagnosed and as many as 20,000 Americans are currently living with ALS, according to the PA Department of Health. The average life expectancy for people with ALS is two to five years from the time of diagnosis. This disease has no known cause, cure or means of prevention. Notably, military veterans are at a 50% or greater risk of developing ALS than those who have not served in the military. We hope you will join us in bringing recognition to this devastating disease and support to those living with it by co-sponsoring this resolution. |
