Subject: | Alternate Throwback Semiquincentennial Plate |
I am very excited about celebrating America’s 250th birthday in 2026. As such, I will soon be introducing legislation to create an alternate Semiquincentennial Plate for Pennsylvania’s motorists. Act 48 of 2020 created the USA semiquincentennial registration plate in the Commonwealth, which is within the current family of plates created by PennDOT with the blue-white-yellow color scheme used on normal license plates. When a motorist opts for this plate, 25 dollars of the fee is deposited by into the Semiquincentenial Restricted Account in the State Treasury for activities related to the upcoming America 250 celebration in 2026. My legislation would create an alternate Semiquincentennial plate which would be a throwback to the Bicentennial plate of the 1970’s as well as older license plates from the 1950’s and 60’s. The plate will feature the phrase “1776 – AMERICA 250 – 2026” at the top, “PENNSYLVANIA” at the bottom, the Liberty Bell in the center, and an outline of Pennsylvania around the rim. All these features will be raised from the plate’s surface for an embossed effect. The color scheme will be similar to the Bicentennial plate – a dark blue field with the raised elements in yellow. As with the original Semiquincentennial Plate, 25 dollars of the alternate plate fee will be deposited into the Semiquincentennial Restricted Account. A mockup of my proposed alternate design is attached to this memo. I believe this design will be attractive to motorists who favor Pennsylvania’s older license plate designs and those who wish to help finance the upcoming America 250 celebration here in Pennsylvania, the place where freedom got its start. Please join me in sponsoring this legislation to help celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. |
