Subject: | National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day |
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, Pennsylvania has more police departments than any other state in the nation and the ninth most law enforcement officers. As members of the Law Enforcement Caucus, we endeavor to honor and recognize those who serve and those who gave their lives in the line of duty. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed proclamation 3466 which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. National Police Week is commemorated each year with the Annual Candlelight Vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC to honor the fallen officers whose names have recently been added to the Memorial. Please join us in honoring our law enforcement officers by cosponsoring this resolution recognizing May 12 – 18, 2024 as “National Police Week” and May 15, 2024 as “Peace Officers Memorial Day” in Pennsylvania. |
