| Subject: | Designating May as Water Safety Month |
| As a Commonwealth that is known for abundant water recreation, making sure Pennsylvanians are aware of safe water practices must be a priority. When enjoying the water, especially as the weather begins to warm up, having fun does not mean sacrificing safety. Wearing a life jacket should be common practice, but in boating accidents in Pennsylvania from 2022-2023, of the 17 fatalities that have occurred, only 4 individuals were wearing life jackets. A graduate from Peters Township Highschool, 23-year-old James DeAngelo drowned at a marina in Washington County from the suspected electrical shock risks hidden beneath the water. Water safety comes in many forms. Having conversations now and spreading awareness will encourage Pennsylvanians to be educated on water safety before it is too late. The month of May has been recognized as National Water Safety Month by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, American Red Cross, National Drowning Prevention Alliance, National Recreation and Park Association, and the World Waterpark Association. I have recently introduced HR363 to designate April as Low Head Dam Public Safety Awareness Month, and I want to continue to increase awareness in our Commonwealth around water safety. This resolution will not only raise awareness, but it will help encourage safe practices as Pennsylvanians plan their summer outdoor activities. Please join me in cosponsoring this important resolution. |
