MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 14, 2024 09:35 AM
From: Representative Dallas Kephart
To: All House members
Subject: Sergeant John Harold Branic Memorial Bridge

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation designating a bridge carrying Pennsylvania Route 53 over the Clearfield Creek in Bigler Township, Clearfield County, as the Sergeant John Harold Branic Memorial Bridge.

John Harold Branic was born on April 4, 1916, in Madera, Clearfield County and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the start of World War II, becoming a member of L Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines obtaining the rank of Sergeant.

Sergeant Branic and the men of the 5th Marines began a combat patrol on Guadalcanal on August 18, 1942. During an attack on August 19th, 1942, Sergeant Branic was killed. Until 1992, Sergeant Branic’s body was never recovered. However, as work commenced at the Guadalcanal Memorial, the remains of a marine were found with a ring with the initials J.H.B on the band. Later the remains were identified as Sergeant Branic and on August 9, 2006 he was laid to rest officially in Arlington National Cemetery.

I hope you will sponsor this legislation and join me in honoring the first Madera resident to be killed during World War II.
