MEMORANDUM

Subject: Preeclampsia Awareness Month (May 2024)

Preeclampsia is a dangerous complication of pregnancy associated with a rapid rise in blood pressure that may lead to seizures, strokes, and organ failure, among other possible complications. It occurs in about 5 to 7 percent of all pregnancies.  This is a life-threatening complication that results in more than 70,000 mothers and 500,000 infants passing away worldwide every year. It is important that families are informed about the condition so that they may take steps to ensure a healthy pregnancy and an avoidance of these severe health outcomes.

My resolution would recognize May 2024 as “Preeclampsia Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania and bring more attention to preeclampsia, its effects, and ways of supporting those impacted by the condition. Preeclampsia can be properly treated, and its worst effects avoided, if recognized early and if proper medical care is sought. By informing Pennsylvanians about preeclampsia and other related conditions, such as HELLP syndrome and eclampsia, we can work towards reducing the commonality and severity of these conditions and help save lives.

Thousands of pregnant women experience preeclampsia every year, and unfortunately, many women or their infants pass away or experience long-term complications because of the condition. Pennsylvanians should be aware of the risk factors and symptoms of preeclampsia so that they may seek appropriate medical treatment. I hope that you will join me in recognizing May 2024 as “Preeclampsia Awareness Month” so that more people are informed about this life-threatening condition.
