Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 31, 2024 12:59 PM
From: Representative Joshua Siegel
To: All House members
Subject: Strengthening our Public Sector Unions Act

Often, public employers may withhold contact information for members of a collective bargaining unit. Whether this lack of communication is deliberate or an oversight, it limits the worker’s ability to communicate with the organization that is representing them and bargaining on their behalf. We can do better for public workers.

My bill will require that, within 30 days of hire, a public worker’s contact information is shared with the organization representing them. This will help facilitate communication between the public worker and the union representing them.

Additionally, public employees must be made aware of resources and benefits they have available to them. In addition to requiring the timely sharing of public worker contact information, my bill will require unions to be a part of a worker’s onboarding and training. As a part of this training, the union representatives will provide an explanation of benefits and be able to address any questions or concerns. This will ease and expand access to the benefits public workers are provided.

Join me in supporting our public workers by improving communication between them and their unions and increasing awareness of the benefits they are offered. Our public workers are vital to Pennsylvania and we need to provide them with the environment and resources needed to be successful.
