Subject: | Preventing Illegal Migrants from Accessing Public Housing |
Since 2021, The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has waived requirements for verifying citizenship for individuals applying for the Emergency Housing Voucher (EHV) program. Unauthorized immigration is surging, with record numbers of illegal border crossings being seen in recent years. Local housing authorities already deal with those that take advantage of the mismanaged HUD system to receive vouchers in cities that they have no intention of residing in long-term, and communities across the Commonwealth are not equipped to deal with the influx of migrants in need of housing. Pennsylvanians should not have to shoulder the financial burden of housing individuals that are in our country illegally. That is why I plan to introduce legislation that would prohibit housing authorities from providing housing assistance to illegal migrants. Although HUD needs to make policy changes to ensure a safer and more affordable public housing system, this legislation will guarantee local public housing authorities in Pennsylvania will not house unauthorized immigrants. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to help create a more transparent, safer public housing system in our Commonwealth. |
