Subject: Getting the Best out of Pennsylvania’s Hydrogen Hubs

Hydrogen production is gaining popularity as a cleaner method of energy production. Hydrogen can be created using green energy sources, such as water, or as a byproduct of Pennsylvania’s legacy natural resources like oil and natural gas. As plans develop for hydrogen production in the state, now is the time to ensure that Pennsylvania leads by example by producing hydrogen responsibly.

Hydrogen production using oil and natural gas may rely on carbon capture and storage for net-zero carbon emissions outcomes, for example. We need to be sure that, if we start using this new technology, we take every precaution to ensure that our hydrogen production is actually cleaner than the nonrenewable sources we currently rely on.

To that end, I will introduce legislation to productively regulate hydrogen hubs in Pennsylvania. Specifically, this bill will give regulatory authority to a state agency to oversee hydrogen hubs and, in addition, create a tax credit incentive for those who make the switch to clean hydrogen energy.

Pennsylvania has a unique opportunity to become an early leader in hydrogen production across the United States. Please consider co-sponsoring this legislation to ensure that the future of energy production in our country is clean, as we work to lower our greenhouse gas emissions.

Introduced as HB2521
