Subject: Sales Tax Exemption for Affordable Housing Building Materials

In Pennsylvania, we are facing an affordable housing shortage which prevents many families from affording a place to call home. The shortage also affects stable jobs for contractors and the price of building materials to encourage more growth. Currently, building materials are subject to the state sales tax, which financially burdens contractors and their customers and can be a hindrance to the building of additional affordable housing units.

Both Colorado and our neighboring state of New Jersey provide a sales tax exemption to contractors who purchase materials, supplies, and provide services for qualifying affordable housing projects. My legislation would join these states in working to address the affordable housing crisis by ensuring that those who build affordable housing are able to purchase the materials they need without the sales tax burden.

Please join me in supporting this legislation to encourage more affordable housing units available for Pennsylvanians in need.
