Subject: Permanently Designating September as “International Underground Railroad Month”
 
The Underground Railroad is a significant freedom movement in African American history. While facing unimaginable hardship and trauma, freedom seekers traversed Pennsylvania using the Underground Railroad during the nineteenth century. A multitude of safe houses, hiding places, and escape routes operated covertly throughout the state, and a multiracial network of Pennsylvanians risked their own lives to help their compatriots escape bondage. The Underground Railroad was integral in the freedom and advancement of African American people in the past, as well as today.
 
It is essential that we recognize the impact of the Underground Railroad, as well as the inspirational efforts of the freedom seekers and abolitionists of Pennsylvania. For this reason, we plan to introduce a bill to permanently designate the month of September as “International Underground Railroad Month” in Pennsylvania. This legislation will honor our great state and its people as well as all those who have fought and continue to fight for their freedom.
