MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 7, 2024 01:24 PM
From: Representative Joseph C. Hohenstein and Rep. Melissa Cerrato, Rep. Marla Brown, Rep. Tarik Khan
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Urging Congress to Pass the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act (S. 2767)

The federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program provides necessary assistance to individuals who have disabilities and individuals who are 65 or older. SSI benefits are typically approved for individuals living on a fixed income or with little resources. Current resource limits have not changed since 1989 and are set at $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. These stagnant resource limits may exclude many who could benefit from the program and may also cause others to fear losing their benefits.

To ensure that individuals who have disabilities and our older adults do not lose benefits based on these outdated limitations, I, along with my colleagues, am introducing a resolution to urge Congress to pass the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act (S. 2767). The SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act will increase resource limits, allow our older adults and individuals who have disabilities to save money, and reduce the fear of losing benefits due to resources exceeding current program limits.

Please consider joining us in this effort to support individuals who have disabilities and our older adult population by urging Congress to pass the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act (S. 2767).
