| I will soon be introducing legislation to allow homeowners or residents to initiate a review of outdated voter registrations at their address. As Pennsylvania’s status as the largest swing state becomes increasingly well-established, many Pennsylvanians find themselves inundated in not only campaign ads, but also mail from candidates, parties, and advocacy groups. Mail intended for a resident of a household serves a purpose, but for many Pennsylvanians receiving election mail for past residents of their address, the volume can quickly become a nuisance. With some groups sending unsolicited applications for mail-in ballots- which many misunderstand to be sent by the County or State- these outdated registrations can also undermine voters’ confidence in our elections system. The legislation will simply allow for the existing process of registration review to be initiated by the report of a homeowner or resident of a single unit that they suspect a registration at their address is outdated. The same state and federal protections would apply to that review process, including the requirement that a registered voter be contacted to update their registration, and given multiple election cycles of inactivity and non-response prior to any de-registration. I believe this commonsense reform can provide a solution to an increasingly prevalent nuisance for our constituents, as well as reassuring all voters of the security of voter rolls.
